Dr. Mette Mogensen MD, PhD
About Mette Mogensen
Dr. Mette Mogensen is Chief Consultant in Dermatology (Overlæge) at the Department of Dermato-Venereology, Bispebjerg Hospital, University Hospitals of Copenhagen, Denmark, a position she has held since 2015 (with consultant-level appointments dating from September 2011). She heads the section of Connective Tissue and Autoimmune Skin Disease and Genodermatosis, working in close collaboration with rheumatologists in the fields of SLE, dermatomyositis, and systemic sclerosis. She provides regular teledermatology services in Arctic Greenland. She is Associate Research Professor (Klinisk forskningslektor) in Dermato-Venereology at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Copenhagen, a position she has held since 2014, and Klinisk lektor at the same faculty since January 2013. She is Medical Co-editor of the online Dermatology section of the National Medical Handbook for Doctors and Patients, published by the Danish Regions and Danish Health Authorities, since 2018.
Dr. Mogensen’s primary research focus is diagnostic imaging in dermatology, encompassing advanced optical skin imaging technologies applied to skin cancer and inflammatory and autoimmune skin diseases. Her methodological expertise spans reflectance confocal microscopy, photoacoustic imaging (PAI), optical coherence tomography (OCT), nailfold capillaroscopy, high-frequency ultrasound, fluorescence confocal microscopy, and in vivo reflectance confocal microscopy. A central research goal is the development of image-guided diagnosis and quantification of pigmented skin tumors, cutaneous calcinosis, and other skin diseases using these bedside technologies.
Her translational work bridges advanced optical technologies and clinical trial endpoints in dermatology. She manages an independent research group conducting clinical diagnostic trials on skin cancer and autoimmune skin disease/cutaneous calcinosis, in close collaboration with DTU Compute and the Department of Electrical and Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. She is co-investigator in the ShapeOCT international cooperation with DTU, MIT, and several European countries, and is Advisory Board member in the Horizon Europe project SEQUOIA (101070062): “Sensing using quantum optical coherence tomography with AI.” Her therapeutic focus areas include melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, SLE, dermatomyositis, systemic sclerosis, calcinosis cutis, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and connective tissue diseases.
Dr. Mogensen has served as Principal Investigator (Roche and Horizon/Merck), Consultant (Leo Pharma, Avexxin), and sub-investigator (Leo Pharma, Actelion, Abbott, Astion, Basilea, Symbion) in multiple randomized controlled trials from 2008 to 2022. She is Danish PI in an international discoid lupus study by Horizon (Amgen), ongoing since 2022. She has managed her own independent research group conducting clinical diagnostic trials in skin cancer and autoimmune skin disease since 2020.
Her clinical trial methodology expertise includes image-guided bedside diagnostic trials, commercially sponsored clinical trials in dermatology, and investigator-initiated studies. She is a member of the research council and steering committee at Center for Translational Research at Bispebjerg University Hospital.
Dr. Mogensen has over 4,100 citations. She has 88 peer-reviewed publications (first authorship: 17; last authorship: 25), with 123 publications listed on ResearchGate. Her most cited paper is in Lancet Respiratory Medicine (PMID: 32866440). Her most important paper per her own designation is the diagnostic accuracy of photoacoustic imaging for cutaneous malignant melanoma (JEADV 2024, PMID: 38695655). She serves as reviewer for Scientific Reports (Nature), JAMA Dermatology, British Journal of Dermatology, JEADV, and more than 15 additional journals, and is a member of the Editorial Board of Case Reports in Dermatology. She has received research funding from the Danish Cancer Society (Kræftens Bekæmpelse), Leo Foundation, and multiple Danish foundations. She was board member and secretary of the Danish Society of Dermatologists from 2013 to 2015.
Dr. Mogensen obtained her medical degree from the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen in 2000, and her PhD degree in Dermatology from the same faculty in 2009. She obtained her specialist qualification in Dermato-Venereology in Denmark in 2013. She worked as a Doctor at the Department of Dermatology, Gentofte Hospital, Denmark from February 2010 to January 2011, before joining Bispebjerg Hospital as consultant in September 2011. She has held her academic position at the University of Copenhagen since January 2013, and was appointed Associate Research Professor in 2020.
