Dr. Scott P. Bruder MD, PhD
About Scott Bruder
Dr. Scott P. Bruder is Master Principal and General Manager of Regenerative Medicine at Dark Horse Consulting Group Inc. (since January 2026), following the acquisition of his firm Bruder Consulting & Venture Group (BCVG) by Dark Horse Consulting. BCVG, which he founded and led as CEO from November 2014 to January 2026, provided strategic advisory and consulting services to medical device, regenerative medicine, and biotechnology companies, investment banks, and private equity firms globally, with clients in the US, Canada, Europe, Israel, China, and Japan. He is Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), a position he has held since 1998 (having previously served 13 years as Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery). At IAG, Image Analysis Group, he serves as Regulatory Consulting Partner, with expertise in regenerative medicine, orthopedics, and bone and cartilage repair.
Dr. Bruder’s primary expertise is in the characterization and clinical application of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC), recombinant growth factors, and orthobiologics for bone and cartilage repair. His pioneering work established the scientific and translational basis for hMSC-based therapies, including the development of Selective Cell Retention (SCR) technology for intraoperative enrichment of bone grafts with osteoprogenitor cells, and the development of recombinant growth/differentiation factor 5 (GDF-5/rhGDF-5) for spinal and long-bone repair, which advanced to clinical trials. His expertise spans tissue regeneration for bone, cartilage, intervertebral disc, and soft tissue; biomaterial platforms (hyaluronic acid, demineralized bone matrix, beta-tricalcium phosphate scaffolds); cell therapy manufacturing and scale-up; combination products (biologics/devices); and clinical and regulatory strategy for ATMPs.
He holds more than 20 issued and pending US and international patents, has published nearly 150 original articles, book chapters, and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals, and has been elected a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE, 2011). He was nominated for the President’s National Medal of Technology and Innovation.
Dr. Bruder has extensive experience in the design, execution, and regulatory approval of clinical programs for biologics, devices, and combination products. At Osiris Therapeutics (1994 to 1998) he translated hMSC technology from academic laboratories to clinical-scale therapies. At DePuy Biologics (2000 to 2005) he created the musculoskeletal tissue regeneration (Orthobiologic) capabilities across DePuy Orthopaedics, Spine, Mitek, and Codman, which evolved into a separate division. At Johnson & Johnson Regenerative Therapeutics (2005 to 2007) he led product development across multiple J&J operating companies for musculoskeletal, general surgery, neurobiology, and cardiovascular applications. At Becton Dickinson (2007 to 2012) he oversaw a ~$500 million R&D operating budget with almost 2,000 R&D associates, including clinical and regulatory programs. At Stryker (2012 to 2014) he served as the company’s first-ever Chief Medical and Scientific Officer overseeing clinical and scientific efforts across the $9 billion corporation and represented Stryker at regulatory agencies. He has served on the FDA Advisory Committee for Cellular, Tissue and Gene Therapies. GDF-5 (rhGDF-5) advanced to clinical trials during his tenure at DePuy.
Dr. Bruder has published nearly 150 original articles, book chapters, and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals. ResearchGate lists 55 publications. He holds more than 20 issued and pending US and international patents. He was elected Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) in 2011 and was nominated for the President’s National Medal of Technology and Innovation. He is a magna cum laude graduate of Brown University and CWRU School of Medicine. He has been a distinguished lecturer at societies, universities, and industry events worldwide. He served on the New York Stem Cell Foundation’s Advisory Board, the Liberty Science Center (New Jersey) as Trustee, and on advisory boards at Brown University School of Engineering and Georgia Tech.
Dr. Bruder graduated magna cum laude from Brown University and simultaneously earned his MD and PhD in stem cell biology from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He then obtained clinical training at Albert Einstein Medical Center and the University of Pennsylvania. He joined Osiris Therapeutics in 1994 as its third employee, translating hMSC technology from CWRU founding laboratories into scalable therapies. He has held progressive senior executive roles at Anika Therapeutics (VP R&D, 1998 to 2000), DePuy Biologics/Johnson & Johnson (Worldwide VP DePuy Biologics, 2000 to 2005; Worldwide VP J&J Regenerative Therapeutics, 2005 to 2007), Becton Dickinson (Chief Science and Technology Officer, 2007 to 2012), and Stryker (Chief Medical and Scientific Officer, 2012 to 2014), before founding his consulting practice in 2014.
