Prof. Sotirios Bisdas is Senior Medical Director for Neuro-Oncology and Neurology at IAG, Image Analysis Group, a position he has held since March 2017, serving as Therapeutic Area Lead for Neuroimaging, Neuro-Oncology, and Advanced Oncology. He is Honorary Consultant Neuroradiologist at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (since October 2015), where he previously served as MRI and Clinical Lead and Lead of the Research Neurooncology Group. He is Associate Professor of Neuroradiology at UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology (since October 2015), Professor of Radiology at the University of Tübingen (since June 2012), and Adjunct Professor of Neuroradiology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas (since March 2023). He holds additional honorary professorships at the University of Messina (Honorary Associate Professor of Applied Biomedical Engineering, since November 2019) and the Universidad Internacional del Ecuador (Honorary Professor of Radiology, since August 2020). He is also Consultant Neuroradiologist at Queen Square Private Healthcare (since January 2016) and HCA Healthcare (since January 2019), and Honorary Consultant Paediatric Neuroradiologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (since July 2018). He is Research Lead for Neuro-Oncology at the Department of Neuroradiology, UCLH NHS Trust (since June 2017), and Founder and Director of NEUROICON LIMITED, a medical imaging consultancy (since February 2016).
Prof. Bisdas’s primary research focus is advanced and molecular neuroimaging, with particular depth in neuro-oncology, neurodegeneration, traumatic brain injury, and head and neck diseases. His methodological expertise spans advanced CT, intraoperative MRI, advanced and functional MRI, molecular MR-PET imaging, ultra-high-field MR spectroscopy (9.4T), diffusion kurtosis imaging, intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted MRI, dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI perfusion, arterial spin labelling, amide proton transfer-weighted (APTw) CEST imaging, and AI and machine learning applications in neuroimaging. He has been actively involved in MR-PET imaging since its launch in 2009.
His translational research bridges advanced imaging methodology and clinical trial endpoints in neuro-oncology. He is Clinical Lead of the flagship neuro-oncology program, a joint initiative of the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. He has served as principal or chief investigator on multiple clinical imaging trials, attracting over £1 million in intramural and external research funding. He conducts experiments to validate the usefulness of AI and machine learning algorithms and software products in neuroimaging, and holds a postgraduate diploma in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence and an MBA from Hult Ashridge Executive Education. He is an NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Program participant (since March 2023).
Prof. Bisdas has served as principal or chief investigator on multiple clinical imaging trials. Named trials from supplied sources include: the GLORIA trial (L-RNA aptamer-based CXCL12 inhibition combined with radiotherapy and bevacizumab in newly-diagnosed glioblastoma), a Phase I/II trial with dose escalation results published in Nature Communications (2024, DOI: 10.1038/s41467-024-48416-9) and expansion results published in Nature Communications (2026, DOI: 10.1038/s41467-026-71362-7). He is a named author on imaging methodology papers for structured reporting of gliomas based on VASARI criteria (BMC Medical Imaging 2025, DOI: 10.1186/s12880-025-01603-6) and the Checklist for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging (CLAIM) 2024 update (Radiology Artificial Intelligence 2024, DOI: 10.1148/ryai.240300).
At IAG his role encompasses helping biopharma partners maximize clinical outcomes and overcome challenges in drug development through imaging biomarker strategy, achieving results such as Phase 3 deal terms at the Phase 2 stage, statistically significant efficacy data in Phase I, and Phase 2 study results accepted by the FDA as pivotal studies. He has served as a Consultant to GE Healthcare (since January 2017) and as an Advisory Board Member and Scientific Advisory Board Member at Olea Medical (since 2014/2015).
Prof. Bisdas has authored over 270 peer-reviewed publications and more than 10 book chapters. He has delivered more than 300 keynote lectures and educational presentations internationally. He received the Innovation Award from Olea Medical (October 2015), an Award from the Association of University Radiologists (May 2011), and a Certificate of Appreciation from the Japanese Society of Neuroradiology. He is a Fellow of the European Society of Neuroradiology, a Fellow of the European Society of Head and Neck Radiology, and a Fellow of the British Society of Head and Neck Radiology. His GMC registration number is 7503143 and his ORCID is 0000-0001-9930-5549.
Prof. Bisdas obtained his MBBS (Ptychio Iatrikes) from the University of Athens, Greece (1996 to 2002). He completed his MD thesis in psychiatry at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz following joint studies at the University of Athens and the University of Mainz (2000 to 2002/2003). He underwent Neuroradiology residency training at Hannover Medical School (2002 to 2003) and Radiology residency at Goethe University Frankfurt (2003 to 2008), followed by a post-doctoral scholarship in Neuroradiology Research at the Medical University of South Carolina, USA (2007 to 2008). He completed his PhD in Radiology-Neuroradiology at the University of Tübingen (2009 to 2012), obtained the Privatdozent qualification from Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen (2010), and obtained his MSc in Advanced Oncology from Ulm University (2010 to 2012).
