EULAR 2026: Advancing Imaging and AI in Rheumatology

EULAR 2026 provided a dynamic platform for clinicians, researchers, and industry leaders to examine how emerging technologies are reshaping rheumatology. This year’s congress highlighted the growing importance of advanced imaging and AI-driven approaches in enhancing disease detection, monitoring progression, and evaluating treatment responses in clinical trials and practice.

A key theme across sessions was the balance between opportunity and implementation—while digital tools are advancing rapidly; questions remain around standardization, validation, and integration into routine workflows.

IAG at the Forefront of Innovation

Image Analysis Group (IAG) is proud to be part of these important discussions, contributing expertise in imaging science and clinical trial support. Our team is engaged with partners across the ecosystem to explore how imaging strategies and quantitative endpoints can be optimized to support more efficient and robust rheumatology studies.

A highlight of the congress was the presentation by Prof. Mikael Boesen, Senior Therapeutic Area Lead at IAG, during the Innovation session “Digitalisation in Rheumatology – Potential and Blind Spots.”

AI in Rheumatological Imaging: Current Status and Potential

In his talk, Prof. Boesen explored the current landscape of AI in rheumatological imaging, outlining both its transformative potential and the challenges that remain.

Key insights included:

  • The increasing role of AI in improving sensitivity and consistency in image interpretation.
  • Opportunities for earlier disease detection and more precise assessment of treatment response.
  • The importance of robust validation and regulatory alignment enable broader adoption.
  • Existing blind spots, including variability in data quality, lack of standardization, and the need for clinically meaningful endpoints.

His presentation reinforced that while AI is no longer a future concept, its full value will depend on careful integration into clinical workflows and trial design.

Looking Ahead

EULAR 2026 underscored that imaging and AI are central to the future of rheumatology research and care. As the field continues to evolve, collaboration between clinicians, technology providers, and trial experts will be essential to translate innovation into real-world impact.

At IAG, we remain committed to advancing imaging science and supporting our partners with expert-driven, data-led solutions that improve trial outcomes and ultimately benefit patients.
